State set for President election

IMPHAL, July 17: Sixty MLAs and three MPs of the state will cast their votes for electing the President at the State Legislative Assembly, Chingmeirong on Thursday, July 19.

Chief Election Officer, PC Lawmkunga made the announcement to the media at Manipur Secretariat South block,conference hall today. He stated that the voting will commence from 10 am and will continue till 11 am, the counting will be done till 5 pm. The ballot boxes will be kept under tight security at the Assembly complex and will be transported to Parliament House, New Delhi the following day.

Mentioning that all the necessary arrangement for conducting the election have been finalized, he said that Anup Chandra Pandey, Joint Secretary,Ministry of Labour and Employment has been appointed as the Observer for the voting. He is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

Dr Vivek K Agnihotri, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha has been designated as the Returning Officer for conduct of the election for the state, Assembly secretary Y Indira Devi and deputy secretary M Ramani Devi have been deputed as the Assistant Returning Officers and will be responsible for conduct of the voting at Imphal.

The CEO detailed that each vote of an MLA has a vote value of 18, the state having 60 MLA contribute 1080 points. Each Member of Parliament has 708 points and the three MPs contribute 2124 vote value. The total contribution by the MLA and MPs will be 3204 to the National vote value fixed at 10,98,882.The counting of votes will take place at the office of the Returning Officer in room number 63 of Parliament House.

It may be mentioned that the Congress has 42 seats and the MSCP having 5 MLAs also announced support for Congress candidate Pranab Mukherjee.
