IMPHAL, July 12: The United Committee Manipur has strongly condemned the arrest and forcible detention of ILP campaigner KB Sharma who has gone unto fast in protest against the government stance on the Inner Line Permit System.
The UCM today staged a sit in protest at Keishampat Lairembi Community hall followed by a protest rally later in the evening.
The protest rally which started at around 2pm was however cut short by a Imphal West Police team led by Addl Sp (L&O) Issak Shah at Paona International market.
Some representatives of the UCM comprising of UCM advisor RK Ranendrajit, president Nabachandra were taken to CM secretariat to submit their memorandum.
It may be mentioned that KB Sharma was arrested on July 9 and currently put at the JNIMS male medicine ward, where he is being chained and administered with DNS Glucose Saline.
Speaking to IFP on the sidelines of the sit in protest at Keishampat, UCM president Y Nabachandra held the state government responsible for the present impasse.
“The government is yet to take any serious stance on the issue, even though the UCM has been bemoaning on the need for the implementation of the ILP”, he stated.
Nabachandra further informed that the UCM is going to submit a memorandum address to the Chief Minister this evening.
He further warned of another course of agitation if the government does not table the issue in the Assembly according to the wish of the people.
Referring to the Home Minister’s statement that the ILP cannot be implemented by the state government, the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System condemned the Ibobi government as inefficient and that it has failed to lived up to the expectation of the people.
Meanwhile, the Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy students and staffs also staged a sit in protest at the college premises demanding implementation of the ILP.
Apunba Lup, Paona Bazar and shop owners of the area also staged sit in protest at USHA cinema hall.
In a show of solidarity, shops of Paona Bazar and Governor Road also remain closed today.
