2 convicts pardoned

IMPHAL, August 16: The Sajiwa Jail Authorities today released two of its prisoners after receiving their pardons from the Governor of the state on the occasion of the Independence Day.

The two have been identified as Sandham Tomba Singh, 63 of Haoreibi Mayai Leikai and Moirangthem Ibobi Singh, 79 of Yairipok Top Leikai.

According to the Addl DGP, Prisons MK Das, the Jail Advisory Board members comprising of its Chairman and state Law Minister Th Devendro Singh, MLA, T Manga Vaiphei, Addl DGP Prisons, MK Das, District session judge, Imphal West Manipur, S Ibomcha Singh and SP Jail IK Muivah met on August 1 to review the sentences of the two convicts.

He said after a serious deliberation on the issue, the board decided to recommend their release to the state government in the name of the state Governor.

The recommendation was approved by the government after which the two were released.

Further according to the Jail Addl DGP, Sandham Tomba Singh was serving a jail term of 18 years since June 4, 1998 however; he was released today after serving only 15 years and seven months with a remission period of two years and six months.

He was sentenced for killing the father of a man who was accused of kidnapping and raping his daughter.

Meanwhile, Moirangthem Ibobi Singh was serving a jail term for 17 years and 14 days since 1999 for killing a local during a confrontation, however, he was released after actually serving his sentence for 14 years three months and 19 days with a remission period of two years, eight months and 25 days.

The Jail Addl DGP also informed that so far a total of six life convicts have been released after pardon from the jail.

He identified the six as Amerjan Bibi released on August 15, 1999, Nurjahan Bibi released on August 15, 2001, Th jagadish Singh released on August 15, 2001, Th Ibochou Singh released on January 26, 2011 and the two released today.

The two were welcomed by their respective family members.

The family members while rejoicing the pardons expressed their gratitude to the state government.
