IMPHAL, August 14: The Custom and Traditional Observation Committee today organized the 9th Custom & Traditional Observation Day 2012 at the Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU).
The committee observed this day in commemoration with the day the British left Manipur
The observation also reflects the culture and traditions of the people of both the hills and valleys of Manipur and organized under the motto “Custom is the bridge between the hills and plains of Manipur”.
The function was attended by Keishamthong MLA, L Ibomcha Singh as chief guest, Chingai MLA, MK Preshow Simray as distinguished guest.
A book entitled “Thoubal Saion taret ki ama dagi mari suba” was also released and presented by the chairperson of Indira Books Publishing House, Indira.
Further Dr N Ibohal Meitei talked on title ‘Meitei Laiyengdi Asibabu Hingathanba Ngamba Sida Hidakni’.
He said that though Manipur is gifted with natural medicinal herbs, the people of the state use medicines brought from outside.
He added that some of the branded pharmaceutical products use ingredients available in Manipur.
Elaborating on the uniqueness of the medicinal plants found in the state, he urged the people of the state to preserve our treasure of medicinal plants.
He further continued that the preservation of the plants could provide jobs to a large number of people.
It could help employ people and provide them a decent living without depending on government jobs, he said.
Further elaborating he said, child delivery at the hospitals now cost around Rs 30000, however those living under poverty line could not afford the hospital fees and added that if we produce our own medicines, it would be a lot more affordable.
Meanwhile, main highlights of the day included traditional dances and folk songs both from the hills and the valley districts.
Gifts were also distributed to fatherless widow’s children, performers and other intellectuals of Manipur.
Padmashri Dr M Kriti recited Indo Manipur (British) War of 1891.
Principal School of Driving & Automobile Technology Th Ibochaoba Singh elaborated the road safety awareness.
He lamented the process of issuing driving license to inexperienced drivers which has become a common practice in the state today leading to numerous road accidents in the state.
He said that he has even come across a person who came to learn driving from his institute after acquiring his driving license.
