IMPHAL, August 29: Just after the recent panic created among north-eastern students studying in various states located across the country following the riots in Kokrajhar at Assam, a Manipuri student has been found decapitated and murdered in Chandigarh, according to reports reaching Imphal.
It may be mentioned here that, many Manipuri students and professionals who fled Indian cities had begun to return following assurances from the respective state governments. The Karnataka Home Minister R Ashoka had even visited the northeast states including Manipur to assure a sense of security in Bangalore and Karnataka state.
According to reports culled from Chandigarh, the deceased is identified as Pangambam Rabi,20, son of Pangambam Sanggai Singh of Kongpal Ningthoubung Leirak, Imphal East. Rabi is a second year Science student of Chandigarh Government College located at Khudalahore, Chandigarh.
Rabi was staying at a rented house at Khudalahore with his elder brother, P Ranjan who is studying his second year semester at DAV College, Chandigarh.
Brother of the deceased Ranjan told IFP over a telephonic conversation that Rabi had left his room on August 25 morning. He later came back in a dishevelled manner. His clothes were wet and he seemed very tense. Ranjan curious on what had happened to his brother inquired of him on what happened and where he had left his laptop. Ravi did not reply and was searching for something inside his room. He later left abruptly.
Later, he failed to return to the rented room and has remained missing since August 25. His decapitated corpse was later found at a jungle near Khudalahore today.
Ravi’s corpse was found decapitated, both hands and legs from the calf down was missing. According to police personnel of Sector 11 police station who recovered the body, it was assumed that wild animals were the reason behind Ravi’s missing limbs.
However, the matter came to light today at about 4.30 pm when Ranjan and some companions went to the above-mentioned police station to file a missing person report. The police personnel had brought out a wallet belonging to Rabi which contained an envelope, Rs 150 in cash, passport photos and his college identity card.
There were some admission fee slips but his laptop was not recovered.
Reports mentioned that Ravi along with some of his friends had visited a Modern TV Hotel located at Mayagaon area. The hotel staff had clarified that no one resembling Ravi came to the hotel.
On seeing Ranjan and his friends the personnel stationed at the police station asked them whether they hailed from Nepal or Assam and later the matter came into light. A case has been registered by the police station in the regard.
Rabi’s mother fainted today at their residence in Kongpal on hearing the news of her son’s death. She has been very tense since the news of missing son reach home.
Meanwhile, regarding the incident locals held a meeting at the Kongpal Youth Development Committee late in the night.
