In the thrilling contest of skill and strategy, Vijender won with a 16-15 verdict. Vijender, a former world number one, will now take on Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals.

Boxer Vijender Singh , Saina Nehwal created history on Thursday by becoming the first Indian to reach the semi-finals in the Olympics badminton.

In a pulsating quarterfinal clash at the London Olympics, Saina exhibited excellent court craft and unflinching attitude to defeat senior rival and two-time All England champion Tine Baun of Denmark in straight games 21-15, 22-20.

Saina meets world number one Wang Yihan of China in the semi-finals today.

In the Men’s singles, Parupalli Kashyap crashed out after putting up a brave fight in the quarterfinals. He went down against top-seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia 19-21, 11-21.

In Tennis, the mixed doubles pair of Leander Paes and Sania Mirza is one step closer to clinching a medal in the 16-strong draw by winning their opening encounter.

The duo defeated the Serbian pair of Nenad Zimonjic and Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. The duo will today face top-seeded Belarusian pair of Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi in the last eight stage.

Star Indian boxer Vijender Singh also moved into the quarterfinals of the men’s 75-kg category. At the Excel Arena, he recorded a nail-biting one-point victory over his American opponent Terrell Gausha.
