Spt students provide help to exodus victims

IMPHAL, August 21: Student volunteers of the Mao area today provided medical help and food to 129 students and professions from the state who have fled from Bangalore following the recent reported assaults and threats at Pune, Bangalore and other cities of the country.

The event was mainly organized by several student and civil bodies of the area including ANSAM, UNC, SDSA, SDWA and NPO under the banner, “Helpline desk for the Bangalore Exodus” at Mao gate.

The students were on their way to various parts of the state from Dimapur.

NPO president, ML Markson told media persons said, the helpline desk had been brought out since yesterday midnight under the Mao Students’ Union considering the 96 hours general strike announced by the UNC which was subsequently called off.

He said the helpline desk aimed to provide some respite to the students and professionals of the state who have been traumatised by the threats and assaults.

The helpline will continue for another six days, however if the need arise it will be continued further. From tomorrow, the different organizations of the area will be open throughout the day.

He also added that the organizers have already booked two hotels to provide free fooding to the students and professionals who had to leave their studies and work suddenly.

One Amber Gurung, from Pangei who is working at Bangalore recounted that one of his friends who hails from Tamil Nadu was caught by certain section of the people while returning from work and checked whether he was from the North East. The group had also threatened him that if he was from the NE they would have beaten him.

He continued that fearing for his life after hearing of his friend experience, he returned home leaving all his things back at Bangalore.

Letngam Singson of CHurachandpur a student recounted that he and some of his friends had also experience similar incidents.

He recounted that while he alongwith some of his friends were going out, a group of individuals gheraod them and started asking for their id cards. After finding that they were from Manipur they left them after threatening them to leave the city at the earliest.

Sovi N of Senapati Makhan another student also recounted similar experience.

He recounted that he had escaped from a group of individuals who had tried to assault him.

He further lamented that even though the Karnataka government had announced security to the people of the region, going out from his rented room was always an anxious moment following the threat.

He also added that after reaching Guwahati he had also heard that some of his friends who had remained at Bangalore had experienced similar threats.
