It says that politics starts from family, and for an aspiring politicians educational places are the most favourite spot to sown the seed of their political and social career.
Acknowledging the importance and roles of student’s union in educational institutions as a stepping-stones for young generations to foster their career and personality as a future leader; many dynamic political leaders including Rahul Gandhi came out openly in support of student’s politics and appealed all colleges and universities in the country to conduct and revive student’s union elections.
Since, 1960s students and students’ leader of Manipur were playing a major role in the social developmental processes by spearheading in various state issues. It can be mentioned here the “Go Back Foreigner”, and “Education Reformation Campaign” by AMSU and DESAM. There are N numbers of incidents where students of the state successfully took the lead roles in various students and public related issues.
Again, it is clear that some of the distinguished political and social leaders paved their career with student’s politics by participating in student’s union election.
However, in a state like Manipur, where the role and power of students are vital in the social developmental processes, unfortunately, people were fed up with the prevailing trends of students’ politics.
One such example is Manipur University, where the once powerful and most respected MUSU had been forsaken for all and forever after some unwanted incidents happed in the campus 5-years ago.
It is not the case of a single institution however, undemocratic activities during elections were seen in many educational institutions concentrated around the Imphal city.
With the changing trends of student’s politics in the state and involvement of anti-social activities by the supporters of the candidate is at an alarming situation.
So, it will be a good gesture to the people of Manipur and society at large if we could keep the student’s politics clean and refrain from anti-social elements.
