Tarun Gogoi: Situation has improved in Assam – Assam Riots
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that all the displaced people in the violence hit areas, will be sent home by the 15th of this month. Talking to newsmen in Guwahati today, Gogoi said that the situation has been improving in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts. He also said that 14 relief camps have been closed by the administration as 12 thousand people returned home so far.
Emphasising on the need of proper security arrangements on the violence marred areas, the Chief Minister said that security pickets are being set up at 104 vulnerable areas. The security arrangements would include the involvement of local people, Village Defence Parties and deployment of police and home-guards.
Around 4 lakh people have taken shelter at 278 relief camps. Adequate relief materials are being distributed at the relief camps. An assistance of 500 rupees per family has also been given to buy clothes.
AIR Correspondent reports that 56 persons were killed while 61 had sustained injuries and around five thousand houses were burnt in the recent violence in the state.
