IMPHAL, August 20: The Women Environmental Protection Force, WEPF, Manipur today organized a one day workshop cum demonstration on “Friendly Micro-organism and Environment with special reference to solid Waste Management” at the Hotel Classic, Imphal on August 20.
The inaugural function of the workshop cum demonstration was also attended by the Director of Environment, Dr M Homeshore Singh, Imphal Municipal Council, Chairperson, N Raghumani Singh, Maple Orgatech India Limited, Kolkota, president S Mukherjee as chief guest, president and guest of honour, respectively.
Chief guest, Dr M Homeshore Singh said his department started working on the solid waste management alongwith a French company under the state government since 2004. However after the formation of a new government in the state in 2007, there were some problems and as such the momentum lost, he said.
He continued that the state government received a fund of Rs 34 crore from the Union Urban Ministry in 2009 for the development of the Solid Waste Management in the state. With the central assistance, a dumping site was established at Lamdeng.
He expressed with the steep rise in population in the state particularly in the urban areas, the deposition of solid waste has become a problem. He said if we fail to solve the issue scientifically, it could be hazardous to our health as well as the eco-system.
He further urged all concern to keep the Khwairamband keithel clean.
Everyone should be aware of the present environmental issues, as it concerns all sections of the society.
There is a need for everyone to consider for the future.
Raghumani in his presidential speech said in the past when the population was not so much, solid waste management was easy.
He continued that in the past, people used the waste products to fertilize their land.
The increase in population has made it a problem for the department to manage the solid waste now.
He continued that the presence of several unlicensed vendors in the Khwairamband Keithels have also dirtied the area.
He continued that our people have the habit of throwing garbage along the roadside which has only made the matter worse. He urged the people to contact the IMC for their garbage instead of dumping it along the roadside.
Private hospitals should also take all necessary permissions from the concern authorities before opening their clinics and hospitals.
