IMPHAL, September 19: The Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has called for a regular Director of Higher Education in the state.

The students’ body submitted a charter of demands to the concerned authorities for speedy development of the educational infrastructure in the State.

Speaking to mediapersons at DESAM head office located at Keisampat this afternoon, general secretary of the organization Thoithoi said that the memorandum had been submitted to the education minister M Okendro today and other concerned officials. The memorandum highlights the various wants of the education sector.

He affirmed that if the demands are not addressed from the Government’s side within a span of 15 days, a series of agitations will be launched.

The memorandum urges three key demands inclusive of filling up the post of Director of Higher Education which has been lying vacant since 1986; Principals to be appointed on regular basis for colleges; and improvement of the academic health and effective administration.

It also mentioned improving the human resource infrastructure of both government and government aided colleges by creating teaching posts proportionate to the student strength, to fill up vacant posts and regular appointment of librarians.

Addressing the want in physical infrastructure of the educational institutes, DESAM also urged for providing facilities of essentials including water, uninterrupted electricity and further for renovation of college buildings, laboratories, toilets etc.

It also mentioned of implementing mechanisms for better co-ordination between the Manipur University and its affiliated colleges for maintaining a healthy academic relationship.
