Road blocked on recount demand

IMPHAL, September 19: Supporters of Lairenjam Ibemhal Devi, a candidate of Zilla Parishad of the 6-Laipham Khunou Zilla Parishad, Imphal East took out a rally and blocked Dingko road today demanding recounting of the votes. 

Earlier in the morning staring from 10 am the supporters staged a sit-in-protest at the Community hall of Laipham Khunou and later in the afternoon at around 3 pm the supporters took out the rally and block Dingko road. They block vehicle movement including school buses and drinking water trucks, passenger services for more than an hour. Police came and defused the situation.

Briefing media persons at her residence,LairenjamIbemhal Devi expressed strong suspicion at the way the counting of vote was conducted and demanded for a proper recounting.

She further narrated the story that the result was declared on September 17 and on that day her chief agent, KeisamMohendro Singh called her up and informed her that she have won the election and ask her to come to collect the certificate.

Her chief agent further told her that he had confirmed her win that he saw the certificate of her win with his own eyes. So she went to the DC office to collect it, she said.

She further said that the officials ask her to wait for some time and in the meantime they saw her opposition candidate Sunder meeting with the Returning Officer, who is also a relative of Sunder, she said.

And after an hour or so, the result was declared and Sunder won the election by 100 votes. They were told that was an error in the earlier counting where they missed 100 votes from the Nagaram polling station, she further said.

She has submitted a representation to the Election commission and DC in this regard, she added.
