IMPHAL, October 6: The Manipur University, Manipuri Department and the Tungee Yaiphanaba Shemba Kanglup, Samurou today organised a one day seminar on ‘Contemporary Relevance of Mahakavi Hijam Anganghal Singh’ to commemorate his 120th Birth Anniversary at the Manipuri Department auditorium, MU today.
The seminar was attended by MU Vice Chancellor Prof H Nandakumar Sarma, Manipuri head of Department, MU Prof P Gunindro Singh and Prof E Dinamani Singh and Dean School of Humanities, Prof P Nabachandra Singh as chief guest, president and guests of honour, respectively.
Prof Nadakumar said Mahakavi Hijam Anganghal Singh has contributed a lot of poems to the Manipuri literature.
He continued that there it would be hard to fill in the void left by the late poet.
He elaborated that amongst the late poet’s poems that he have read, he finds ‘Khamba Thoibi’ to be the best.
A student should try to thoroughly understand this poem to understand the beauties of that bygone era, he continued.
The beauty of romantic relations as carved out in the poem has been lost in today’s “SMS world”, he said.
Elaborating more on the importance of the poem and its language, he said today’s youth would need to consult a specially designed dictionary to understand the poems which has been composed in “archaic Meiteilon”.
He further urged all researchers, students and others working on Manipuri literature to document their studies and researches so that the future generation may be able to enjoy it’s beauty.
He also expressed his desire to see all the Bengali scripted Manipuri novels and poems into the Meitei Mayek.
Later on the University Vice Chancellor accepted an informal proposal from Manipuri head of Department, MU Prof P Gunindro Singh regarding erection of busts of famous Manipuri poets including Anganghal, Komol and Chaoba.
