`Need to setup more blood banks`

IMPHAL, October 21: In commemoration of the 100th Service Day of ‘Healthwell,’ a project on health care, a voluntary blood donation camp cum campaign was held today at Ram Lal Paul Higher Secondary School.

The programme was organized by Malem Care Foundation, Manipur in collaboration with Directorate of Health Services, Government of Manipur, Manipur AIDS Control Society (MACS) and Blood Bank, JNIMS. 

The function was attended by Minister of PHED & Labour, I Hemochandra Singh, former Minister L Jayantakumar, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Ram Muivah, Councilor of Ward no 9, Imphal Municipal Council S Sunil, and Councilor of Ward no 12, IMC A Romakanta as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively. Addressing the function as chief guest, Hemochandra Singh emphasized on the importance of blood donation and expressed his desire for setting up more blood banks in the state as there is not enough storage even when there are many people willing to donate their blood. 

He also said that the government alone cannot solve all the problems in the state and that it needs people`s support and co-operation.

L Jayantakumar, president of the funtion, said that the state has only two blood banks, one at JNIMS and the other one at RIMS, which are not enough to meet the increasing demands. “Due to lack of storage, we are facing many problems,” he said and urged the state government to look into the matter.

The blood donating camp was participated by many people but due to lack of storage only 24 units of blood were collected, said an organizer.

Students of Ram Lal Paul Higher Secondary School took active part during the blood donation camp.
