GUWAHATI, October 12: Chairman of UNLF RK Meghen @ Sanayaima said that there is nothing illegal in fighting for the restoration of sovereignty of a state.

Speaking to the press after his appearance at the Guwahati NIA special court today Sanayaima said that the objective of his party’s liberation struggle is for restoration of sovereignty and independence of Manipur.

He said, the United Nations Human Rights Charter and other relevant international laws have clearly mentioned that all means including armed struggle for restoration of sovereignty is legal. One has to see how far the Indian government complies with the international laws, he added.

Sanayaima said that they have nothing to demand from the GOI as Manipur was independent country before the merge with India in 1949. He further said that Manipur was never part of India. Saying that it is not illegal to fight for the restoration of sovereignty Sanayaima said, “What we want is what was ours, what ought to be ours and what should be ours.”

UNLF chairman said that the conflict was created by the GOI way back in 1949 when India forced the King of Manipur to sign the merger agreement.

He further said that according to the new constitution of Manipur any agreement signed by the king or the council of ministers need to be rectified by the Manipur assembly which was not done.

RK Meghen said that the people of Manipur still stand by the decision that the merger agreement was null and void. Further he said that in January 2005 the UNLF proposed a democratic solution to the conflict that a plebiscite should be held under the supervision of UN.

UNLF leader said that Manipur-India conflict cannot be decided by a single or group of organisations because it involves the future of Manipur so it has to be decided by the people of Manipur.
