Students to launch hunger strike

    IMPHAL, October 14: The Co-ordination Committee of College Students’ Union to launch ‘hunger strike protest’ in various colleges in the state from October 17 to 26, as the government fails to meet their demands.

    Speaking with media persons at a press meet today at DESAM office, Keishampat Junction, co-convener of the committee, Phelem Baleshore said that the co-ordination committee had recently submitted a memorandum with 11 points of demands addressing to the Education Minister, Director Education (U) and to the Education Commissioner.

    The demands include, filling up the vacant posts of Principal as regular post and also a regular post of Director Edu (U); increase the number of teachers in aided colleges; separate toilet facility for boys and girls and drinking water in every colleges; proper fencing of colleges; well-equipped laboratory in every colleges; and internet facility for every colleges in the state, he said.      

    He said that the committee had given a 15 day time for the government to respond to their demands.  The 15 day time completes on October 3 and till today they have not received any positive response from the govt side or from the concern education department. “The committee had submitted a lot of memorandums to the Education Minister as well as to the Director Education since 2010, but till today there have been no positive response,” he said.

    The first day of the ‘hunger strike’ will be held at Y K College, Thoubal and if the government further neglects the issue, the Co-ordination committee will intensify the agitation, he added.
