UNC calls UCM, AMUCO anti-national

IMPHAL, October 26: The United Naga Council has decried the inaction of Manipur government towards ‘anti-national’ organisations like United Committee, Manipur (UCM) and All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO).

The UNC statement said these organisations are responsible for the acts of burning the Indian national flag and Indian constitution, the arson of the State Legislative Assembly and the Raj Bhavan in Imphal during the “June Uprising” of 2001, all of which are the highest symbols and seat of Indian democracy.

Instead of prosecuting these organisations the state government is glorifying the ‘criminal’ acts of such organisations, it added.

The statement said, the “inclusive” nomenclature of UCM and AMUCO do not include tribal communities which constitute more than 40% of the population of the state of Manipur.

The UNC statement further said, the Nagas in Manipur have in the Naga People’s Convention held on 1st July 2010 resolved to severe all political ties with the communal government of Manipur and to demand an alternative arrangement outside the Government of Manipur.

Reacting to the stand of these organisations it said, UCM is free to demand “pre-merger status” for its constituents, in its jurisdictions but certainly not for the tribals who own 90% of the geographical area of the present state of Manipur.

With regard to the UCM statement that the Government of India should not do anything that would disturb communal harmony the UNC statement questioned, where is the communal harmony that the UCM is speaking about?

Recalling the Prime Minister’s position on the Naga-Meitei divide in Manipur on communal lines, the statement said, the position taken by the UCM and others, in which they stridently advocate the continued suppression of the rights of Nagas, is antithetical to the very idea of communal harmony.

The peaceful parting of the Nagas in Manipur and the Meiteis as good neighbours is the only way to avert catastrophic situations that would arise out of the prolongation of the forced union, the statement added.

The UNC further cautioned the Naga Public to remain alert to face any eventuality at this critical time and situation.
