IMPHAL, November 9: The Director General of Border Roads, Lieutenant General S Ravi has assured mediapersons that Barak Makru bridge on NH 37 would be completed by March 2014.
He was briefing mediapersons on the progress of the road constructions under Sewak Project in Manipur during his brief stopover at the Headquarter of 25 BRTF in Imphal today.
Speaking to the media persons, S.Ravi informed that the road Yaingangpokpi to Jessami, 170.88 Km, has been planned to be doubled laned by the BRO and the work on first phase between Ukhrul to Yaingangpokpi, 21 Km, has already started and will be completed in three years.
He said that 40 percent work has been completed at the 10 km long fence along Indo-Myanmar border. He added that the rehabilitation work between 125 to 185 km on Churachanpur –Tipaimukh road is under progress and the Singhat-Sinzawl-Tuivai river will commenced shortly.
He further briefed about the works done by BRO in Nagaland of which the strengthening
of 30 Km on national highway 29 is under progress and about 40 percent of the work on Jotsoma by pass has been completed.The double laning of Kohima-Jessami road has also been approved by the Home Ministry and an estimate of first 17 Km is under preparation, he added.
Talking about the Indo-Myanmar friendship road, he informed that the BRO has already completed the 160 Km Tamu-Kyigone- kalewa road of which the 132 Km Stretch of the road has been handed over to the Myanmar PWD and the resurfacing work on balance 26 Km is under progress and is planned to be completed during this financial year
Speaking of the Imphal –Jiribam road, he said that road has improved considerably and it has become motarable even in monsoon season. He also announced that contract for Barak- Makru bridge has been cleared and the work will begin before December 31, 2012 and will be completed by March 2014. The Director General also brought out that, total of 200 Km road will resurface in the current financial year in both Nagaland and Manipur
When questioned about the challenges faced by BRO in the construction of roads, he said that the absence of stones quarries in Manipur slows down the progress of the work as it takes time in transportation. Another difficulty faced is due to the abundance of rain in the region as work cannot be done in the rain.
However, he expressed his satisfaction on the works being carried out by the Sewak Project and said that the works are progressing as envisage.
