IMPHAL, November 18: Domestic violence led to the death of 25 year old Vimiya Raikhan who succumbed to burn injuries on October 8 at the RIMS, according to her parents.

Seven months pregnant Vimiya was allegedly set on fire by her own husband following a domestic quarrel on August 25 at their rented house at Phungreithang, Ukhrul.

The husband Ningpamsang, 28 son of Ningreion of Lunghar village is presently languishing at the Sajiwa Central jail on charges of ‘attempt to murder’.

Following her death, Vimiya’s three and half year old son and one and half year old daughter are staying with their maternal grandparents.

A select group of media persons visited Vimiya’s parental residence and talk to her parents.

Vimiya’s parents said their daughter had asked them to take custody of her son and daughter and to bury her dead body at her parental village and not allow her husband to take custody of her children.

The two continued, her daughter had always suffered silently during her short married life. She had never uttered a word about the domestic violence that she had to undergo at her husband’s house.

Her mother further said, Vimiya had returned home in 2011 in October and stayed at her parental home for about two months with her children after her husband brought home another woman.

She returned only after her parent in laws repeatedly urged her to return, the bereaved mother continued.

Further recounting on her daughter’s short married life, the mother said her family was informed about the burn incident only by other villagers.

However, when she contacted one of her daughter’s brother in law Ramyo on the phone, he always cut off the phone, she said.

Following which, the parent went to meet Ningpamsang and enquired about the incident but was told that Vimiya had tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire.

Later, Vimiya’s parents alongwith the husband and his family took her to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries after about one a half months of treatment.

The bereaved parents also lamented that they had unknowingly handed their daughter to a man who had no sympathy for his wife. They further alleged that Vimiya was frequently tormented by her husband using harsh and unpleasant words.

He had even slapped her at times, they added.

The bereaved mother further appealed to the authorities to take befitting action against those found guilty.
