IMPHAL, November 7: The atmosphere in the state BJP unit has been building up in the past two three days with its state unit president Sh Shantikumar’s tenure at office about to end on December 15 and the party likely to go on polls.
A party insider told IFP that the atmosphere inside the party regarding its upcoming presidential election has been building up after the recent visit of the BJP NE organizational secretary P Chandrasekhar Rao in the state.
Even as the state unit of the party is awaiting for announcement of the dates regarding the election, the NE organizational secretary during his recent visit has already indicated his preference of former Union Minister Thounaojam Chaoba Singh who had recently on June 8 this year joined the party, said a party insider.
The indication from the central leader has led to several apprehensions and speculations inside the party whether Th Chaoba Singh was promised with the office of president on his joining the party, the source added.
It is also learnt that even though the former Union Minister has not met with central leaders for the post of the party president, several others has been urging the central leaders to make him the president.
Meanwhile, as instructed by central party leaders, the state unit has already spotted 73 councillors starting from the mandal level to be the electors in the presidential election, said a source.
The state unit has only to wait for the party election observer to arrive and announced the dates regarding the election.
Considering all the new developments inside the party, the office bearers of the state unit BJP convened a meeting at the party’s state office at the Nityai Pat Chuthek yesterday. The meeting was also attended by office bearers of the party’s Mahila Mandal, Medical Cell, Yuva Morcha, Kishan Cell and others.
The meeting which started from around 11am concluded at 4pm.
During the meeting it was resolved that the state unit will urge the central leaders to conduct the election to the president’s post according to the constitution of the party.
Sources further informed that a two member team has already left Imphal to submit the resolution to party leaders at New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the present president, Sh Shantikumar has told IFP that yesterday’s meeting was convened for the party’s office bearers and that some individuals who wanted to be the president has been approaching the party leaders. He added that however everything will be cleared out day after tomorrow.
