IMPHAL, November 25: The Women Action for Development, WAD organized the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women at the 1st Manipur Rifles Banquet Hall under the theme “From peace in the Home to Peace in the World: : let’s challenge militarism and end violence against women”.
The observation was attended by Dy Chief Minister Gaikhangam as chief guest, Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai as president and Director Social Welfare G Seityabati and AMWJU president A Mobi as guests of honour.
Speaking at the observation, Dy Chief Minster Gaikhangam said that humans are a social animal; and that human beings are second only to God.
“God created humans with a specific mission, agenda and purpose and whether one accomplishes the purpose or not is what we call life.”
He continued man and woman should respect and love each other which should be the purpose of one’s life.
There are several women in the society who are confined in their own worlds, he said before urging that it is time for such woman to open up and come out of their own worlds.
Development of the people should precede development of the land always; he continued and added that development should start from us.
“Exploitation starts from women themselves, which needs to be stopped at the earliest”, he said.
“Women should start by respecting womanhood and should stand united against all odds and on all issues”, the Deputy Chief Minister.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said that woman plays an important role in developing a society and as such urged the men to look at the woman in a motherly figure.
Meanwhile, Social Welfare Minister AK Meerabai in her speech said we should fully understand the relation between man and woman.
She continued man should not consider woman as the weaker section, as it only disturbs the society.
She said that the day has been observed for the past many years with this year’s edition being the 10th edition.
She continued even though the day is being observed with the objective of fighting violence against women, it seems that crime against women has only increase with each passing year.
There is a need for all to come together and discuss the issue at the earliest, she said.
