IMPHAL, Dec 11: The state Governor , Gurbachan Jagat has wished the people of the state on the eve of Nupilal anniversary in remembrance of the brave women of Manipur who fought against the British.
The Governor in his message has said, “It is a great honour for me to join the people of Manipur in paying our tribute and homage to the brave ladies of Manipur who fought against the colonial rule, monopolistic trade practices and feudalism on the occasion of Nupilal Day, 2012.
“The Manipuri women rose against the export of rice as there was near famine condition in1939 as the harvest was poor the price had shot up making difficult for the womenfolk to keep the heart burning. This agitation which is now known as the 2nd Nupilal is a unique historical episode of Manipur and reminds us of the courage, sacrifice and the Patriotism of those women. They have come out in the front whenever intractable problems descend on the State besides contributing their mite for the social and economic advancement. Later on the women tackled social evils also. When we observe Nupilal, we pay homage and tackled social evils also. When we observed Nupilal we pay homage and tributes to those brave women, both known and unknown, who challenged the might of the British.”
“On this day let us also resolve to work together and harder to make Manipur a more peaceful and prosperous State, which will satisfy the souls of those who fought the Nupilal”, it said.
