IMPHAL, January 17: Members of the six Autonomous District Council, Manipur organized a sit in protest at the District Council Bhavan at Chingmeirong demanding autonomy of the 6 ADCs, separate budgets for the ADCs and adequate devolution of power in respect of power in respect of central sponsored schemes in hill areas to the ADCs.
The members have also demanded adequate devolution of powers for 26 subjects provided under Section 29 (I) of the Manipur (Hill Areas) District Council (Third Amendment) Act 2008.
Speaking to media persons, Henjathang Khongthang, Secretary ADC co ordination committee said the committee has already submitted a memorandum on their demands to the government on January 5 with a seven day ultimatum. He continued that the members have also announced that in case the government failed to approved the demands then the committee will continue with various democratic forms of agitation.
Saying that today’s sit in protest was held after the completion of the seven days ultimatum, he added that in the next one-two days, the committee will be submitting memorandums to the Manipur Governor and the Centre and in case if there is still no positive response, then the members will resign from the ADC.
