IMPHAL, January 16: In continuation of the symposium on “Electoral Reforms Need of the hour” held earlier at Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy, a symposium was held at Slopeland Public School, Khongjom today.

Delivering the keynote address of the day on “Need for Electoral Reforms” Dr Nara Singh, National Co-ordinator, (CERI) expressed that the current electoral system in India is filled  with corruption and corrupts the public.

“The present electoral system enhances corruption and it spreads social turmoil and until and unless the system changes the youth will not be able to develop at all,” he said.

MC Raj, Chief Functionary Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India (CERI) pointed out that 89 countries shifted to “Proportionate Representation” that is “Proportionate Electoral system” while there are 60 countries still following the old system, including India.  “The present system wastes 75% of voters every election,” said MC Raj while adding that the new system is formed in a scientific way and for the interest of the minorities.

“In the present electoral system, the voters vote considering the candidate but in the proportionate electoral system the candidate will have the opportunity to vote in favor of political parties. The political parties have to list the top most candidate of their party and it will send to the election commission. The listed candidate will be enclosed and kept in secret,” he further went on.

MC Raj also stated that many political parties have approved the new electoral initiative, including the Congress party which approved it on 6th March. A Conference was also held on the same theme at Manipur University to deliberate on the  new electoral system.
