IMPHAL, January 17: The Zeliangrong Union (ZU) and Zeliangrong Cultural Council (ZCC) have decided not to press for change of the date of Gaan-ngai holiday.
According to a release of ZU, it may be recalled that ZU and ZCC made a demand to the state government to make January 24 the Gaan-ngai holiday, which is according to Zeliangrong traditional calculation.
“However, the ZU and the ZCC, in a joint meeting, decided to withdraw the said demand for certain reasons. The Chief Minister has been out of station for the past one week for very crucial state political problem in Delhi and likely to be there for another week till the Gaan-ngai eve. Discussion with the CM on this matter is practically not possible in this situation and the absence of the cabinet meeting is not likely possible before the Gaan-ngai.” The joint sitting also decided that the state level Gaan-ngai 2013 celebration being organized by the ZU will hold the function on January 25 on which the state government has declared holiday.
However, the ZU and ZCC do not accept the personal views expressed by certain Zeliangrong organizations suggesting that the Gaan-ngai day could be changed on account of “malamas” or “adikmas” or any other such astrological tithes. The traditional way of calculating the festival day shall decide the Gaan-ngai date, as did in the past, it added.
