IMPHAL, January 3: The dead body of Shankarlal Swami, Proprietor of Mangalam Plywood factory has been recovered from a fish farm near Wahengkhuman.
Police have arrested three persons including two 1st IRB personnel in connection with the abduction and subsequent killing of Shankarlal. The deceased Shankerlal Swami (59) son of Jeebanlal Swami of Badhal district in Jaipur was presently staying at Thangal Bazar. He was kidnapped from the Western Gate of the Kangla and whisked away on an autorickshaw by three men on January 2 morning around 5 am. Following the incident, the City Police had filed an FIR case.
According to a statement of the Imphal West SP, on January 2 around 5am, the police received reliable information that Shankarlal Swami had been kidnapped and taken to an unknown location by some armed miscreants.
“Immediately the district Police swing into action and kept all police stations, Check-posts, gates alerted. Intelligence collection was intensified and finally, the miscreants were identified and arrested today”, it said.
The statement further identified the three as Yumnam Dinesh Singh, Rfn. No. 112005777 of 1st IRB, Kangla, Laishram Herojit Singh, Rfn. No. 2001247 of 1st IRB, Kangla and Hanjabam Dipu alias Punananda Sharma son of (L) Kumar of Brahmapur Thangapat Mapal. Police have arrested all accused and have seized the Maruti Gypsy and the arms involved in the kidnapping, it said. Further according to the statement, the victim could not be rescued alive as the accused had already killed and dumped the victim inside the fish farm near Waheng Khuman Makha Leikai which was recovered after one of the accused Dinesh Singh revealed the whereabouts of Shankarlal Swami.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the two accused Laishram Herojit and Yumnam Dinesh Singh taking advantage of their official position at Kangla Fort, had kidnapped the victim in collusion with the third accused at gun point while the victim was going for a morning walk inside the Kangla on January 2 at 5am for ransom”. Investigation is on and the case will be chargesheeted within a short time, it said.
