IMPHAL, January 19: A one day people convention was organised by Wide Angle and Western Sporting Club (WSC), Ngairangbam on the theme “People Convention on Entitlement Rights” was held at Ngairangbam Community Hall today with objectives to boost women’s empowerment and to make a call for entitlement of rights and to internalize the mandate of right to free and compulsory education so as to promote quality education in Manipur.
In the course of the inaugural function Pradipkumar, Convenor of the Manipur Alliance for Child Rights (MACR) said those persons under the age of 16-18 involved in social crimes such as robbery, murder, rape, etc. after their arrest under the Juvenile Court should be kept in a special place for 3 years and that they cannot be sent to jail. He said, “The involvement of young people in the age group of 16-18 years are mostly due to their environment, their elders, negligence of parents and mainly the lack of proper education. To avoid involvement in crimes by the said age limit, proper guidance, counselling and education should be provided.”
Speaking at the program, Nonibala Convenor of the Women in Governance Manipur said that infanticide is very much in practice even though law has deemed it illegal and punishable. ” Nowadays, the rate of crime against women is increasing because not many women want to take a fight against their entitlements being deprived.
