IMPHAL, February 7: The All Manipur Students’ Union, AMSU has submitted a memorandum to the State Education Minister urging action against “commercialization of education”.
The student body has appealed to the Minister to take necessary action to regulate the fee structures of private institutions and not to allow private schools to be run with a commercial motive and to de-recognise any institutions with commercial motives.
The memorandum signed by the student body’s president has also demanded improvement in the quality of education in government schools on priority basis.
In support of its demand, the student body has said in the memorandum that the quality of education imparted in government schools is deteriorating in the last few decades, thereby compelling parents to seek addmissions to private commercial schools in quest of quality education.
“Taking advantage of the situation”, the student body said, “private schools with commercial motives are now collecting huge amount of money in the pretext of admission fees, monthly fees, computer fees, establishment fees, development fees, maintenance fees, registration fees, enrollment fees, transportation fees, internet fees etc”.
It continued, “Private institutions are charging exorbitant rates as computer fees over and above the monthly fees and even charge library and computer fees from pre-nursery, nursery and KG level students, above the monthly fees”.
It said the said situation is above the capacity of the common people and in violation of the Recognition Rule given by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur, BOSEM and Directorate of Education (S).
