Inter children home sports fest begins

IMPHAL, February 23: The Lions Club of Imphal Greater, Lions Clubs International District 322D is organizing a two day 6th inter children home sports festival at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium that began today.

The festival will feature song, recitation and dance competitions on the first day and track and field events on the last day. AK Mirabai, Minister Social Welfare and Cooperation, and RK Nimai Singh, IAS Commissioner Sports, Art and Culture attended the inaugural ceremony as Chief guest and Guest of honour respectively.

During the occasion, AK Mirabai expressed optimism that such kind of events would impact the younger generations to hold bigger responsibility in the race for progress. “Sports will help in maintaining health, discipline, moral and character of the player. Such camp will also imbibe the sense of oneness among the youths,” she said.

Mirabai exhorted the children to remember Dingku, a children home student who went on to bring laurels for the state in sports. “Keep in mind that without education one cannot find success in any field, and should stay away from intoxicants,” she added.

She then said that under the maintenance plan of the government, a children home which can accommodate a capacity of 50 children has been provided with Rs 16 lakh above maintenance grant for a year.

In an interaction with IFP, some of the participants of the festival expressed happiness and enthusiasm in attending the sports meet. They said that they have been doing practices regularly at their respective children homes for the event.
