IMPHAL, February 25: Political parties of Manipur comprising of the Manipur People’s Party, Communist Party of India and Manipur State Congress Party have decided to take up the drug racket involving security forces to the national level.
Speaking to media persons at MPP office today, Dr M Nara, Secretary of CPI Manipur State said the recent seizure of drug by Thoubal Police commandos from the possession of an army’s PRO defence wing and assistant manager of Indigo airlines has added fuel to the suspicion of public that there must be higher officials’ hand in many other high profile drug peddling cases earlier.
“There is a social crisis in the state of Manipur. It is time for a social democratic revolution in the state. Drug peddling is a factor which will cause to crumble the society. The people are needed to be awakened and find out who are involved in the drug cases,” he added.
“We will go ahead with the people and take it up even to the highest level. There is no meaning of the existence of the government when police, army officials and other VIPs are involved in drug trafficking”, he said.
Sobhakiran, president MPP said it is likely that the army must be involved in many earlier drug cases. “Manipur can now be called the land of drug and black marketing.
The government should clarify on the seizure of drug from an army PRO”, he said.
Meanwhile, various CSOs including Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, Committee on Human Right Alert (COHER), All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) and AMOVA has urged the government to arrest and punish drug peddlers.
In a press meet at AMUCO office today, its president KT Rahman condemned the involvement of army in the drug racket. Public, CSOs and Meira Paibis should cooperate and chase the army away from Manipur, he said.
It is unfortunate that groups likely to be politicians involve in drug peddling. It can be assumed that other higher officials must be involved in drug rackets when army is involved in the same, he added.
