12th Governor`s Cup Women`s Polo tournament begins

    IMPHAL, March 7: The Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association which is affiliated to the Indian Polo Association, New Delhi today organized the opening ceremony of the 23rd Governor’s Cup invitation Polo Tournament for Men, 2013 and the 12th Governor’s Cup women’s Polo tournament, 2013 at Mapal Kangjeibung (Imphal Pologround).

    The opening ceremony was attended by Chief Secretary D.S. Poonia and Addl. Chief P.C. Lawmkunga as Chief Guest and President respectively.

    The Governor Cup is being participated by 15 teams among which 6 teams were of women. Drass Polo Club, a team from Jammu & Kashmir is also participating in the Governor Polo cup.

    Chief Guest D.S. Poonia hoisted the flag and announced the opening of the tournament. Delivering his speech, he said that the state Govt will extend support for the development of the polo game. He said that Manipur Polo has been included in the state tourism festival showcasing its importance relating to the history of Manipur. He continued that Manipur had successfully organized many polo tournaments, including those of International level. He further said that a package has already proposed for the conservation of Manipuri Pony and the polo game.

    He encouraged the participating women teams in the polo tournament. He said that the women of Manipur have contributed in conserving the polo game.

    PC Lawmkunga said that the Mapal Kangjeibung is also a heritage for the game of polo.

    The tournament will conclude on 15th March 2013.
