Manipur, IMPHAL, March 12: The 3rd All Manipur Folk Drama Festival, 2013 will start on March 15th and go on till March 22nd at the Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU) hall at Yaiskul Police Line, Imphal.
Speaking to media person during a press meet at MDU hall, Thokchom Tangkesheswar Singh General Secretary MDU said folk dramas based on old literature and other stories that occurred in the past have now lost their position in the state.
He continued that even though folk dramas are played on stage it reflects the art and culture of the state through its elements of dance, songs, music and martial arts. “The new form of drama has borrowed various styles and stories from Lok Shahitya for literature but the way of playing folk drama is no longer the same as those played by our ancestors. It is now an indigenous dying art of the state,” he said.
He continued that the seven day All Manipur Folk Drama Festival has been organized to save the dying folk drama and to make the general public aware to general public about the rich legacy of folk lore and folk drama.
He further added that Ratan Thiyam, eminent theatre personality and Director of Chorus repertory theatre will be felicitated during the festival.
