IMPHAL, March 24: The Manipur Library Association (MALA), Imphal organized a book release function of Dr Arambam Birajit’s “Electoral Reforms Ama Oina Proportional Representation System” and the Prof PN Kula Memorial Lecture at Lamyanba Shanglen here today.
Reviewing the said book, Advocate Khaidem Mani said the present electoral system in India is contrary to the meaning of democracy. “Minority rules the country instead of the majority, and the democracy is in the stage of total failure now.
Electoral system gives life to democracy and there is no meaning of it if there is no rule of law. The book released today will provide many benefits and it should be made reached to people and political parties”, he said.
O Nabakishore Singh, IAS, Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur who released the book at the function congratulated the author for writing the book that focuses on a new electoral system. “Such step will give a new hope to democracy”, he said while adding that to detect duplicate voters, the use of technology like taking photograph and video coverage during the elections have made the process more transparent.
During the occasion, Prof Th Madhuri Devi, Department of Library and Information Science, MU delivered the Prof PN Kaula Memorial Lecture on the topic “Democracy Mai Pakhanbada Library gee Thoudang”.
Dr M Nara Singh, Former Minister Art and Culture, Manipur and National Co-ordinator Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India and A Sanahanbi Devi also attended the function as President and Guest of honor respectively.
Speaking at the occasion Dr Nara said the book should provide new knowledge to the people. “The present system is becoming unfit to the people. The largest cause of corruption is the present electoral system and proportional electoral system is the need of the hour,” he said.
