IMPHAL, March 23: The World Tuberculosis Day was observed today at the Catholic medical Centre, Koirengei, Imphal East. A street play was also enacted by students of the CMC College of Nursing focusing on this year campaign, informed a press release of the hospital.
It may be mentioned that the World Tuberculosis Day, falling on March 24 each year, is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate the disease. Today tuberculosis causes the deaths of about 1.7 million people each year, mostly in the Third World.
Giving the keynote address of the observation, Dr AD Singh, Medical Superintendent of CMC Hospital highlighted the vision, mission and target of this year `s TB day observation.
“In 2013 we entered the second year of the two-year “Stop TB in my lifetime World TB Day” campaign. At a time when partners are calling for zero TB deaths, we need to make a stronger statement that the world`s failure to stop deaths from TB is an outrage. TB is airborne and can kill – every day 4000 people lose their lives to TB. It is curable at low-cost. But the fight against TB is grossly underfunded”, he said according to the statement.
He further highlighted the causes, diagnosis and the treatment of the TB disease, it said.
In her vote of thanks Thoinu, matron of CMC Hospital thanked Prof M. Akshayakumar, Clinical Psychologist of the Hospital for directing the Street Play, the administration of the hospital, Principal of the College and Dr. AD Singh for their valuable presence, concluded the statement.
