IMPHAL, March 2: In light of the state being rocked by the drug issue in recent times and following the arrest of some high profile individuals including the PRO of the Defence Wing, Indian Army, an Assistant manager of a private airliner and the son of a MLA, the police seem to have unearthed the involvement of high ranking officials and well-connected individuals in drug trafficking. As the revelations have led to public protests on the streets of Imphal including protestors storming Tulihal airport, this IFP reporter had a brief chat with Prof MC Arun of Manipur University who said the recent arrest could just be the “tip of the iceberg”.

“The conduct of the PRO is a crime, and it should not be interpreted only in the drug related context,” he said.

He added that there is a big question on why the government has kept on ignoring actions against a certain private airliner, when there has been repeated seizure of contraband items being confiscated.

“This indicates that the present issue is not just a state issue but a national issue and the Centre needs to take some concrete actions,” Prof MC Arun said while adding that  there is a need for a collective effort from all sections of the society to find the source of all such consignments.
