IMPHAL, March 25: A sit-in protest was held today in front of Keishampat Lairembi Community Hall today following a resolution of the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) demanding immediate fulfillment of the demands in its Executive council-cum-consultative meeting held at Guwahati.
Speaking to reporters at the sidelines of the protest, Sinam Prakash of AMSU and Secretary General of NESO said people of the seven states of the north east region have been looked down by the mainland Indians. He reiterated that the organization was formed to jointly face the hardships of the people and has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister for the welfare of the NE people.
The demands of NESO includes instituting an educational policy and human resource development, repeal of legislations that confer impunity, to address issues of infiltration of illegal migrants and refugees, to give attention to economic and infrastructure development vis a vis concern for environment, to put in an employment policy for North East, and to confer special constitutional status and institute a separate time zone for the NE region, he added.
