Sit-in-protest cum public meeting over agricultural land

IMPHAL, March 5: A sit-in-protest cum public meeting was organized by the Locality Area Protection and Preservation Committee and local clubs at Sangkhapham Bazar in connection with the decreasing problem of agricultural productive land that has ended up being converted to homestead land, industrial areas, school, etc.

Speaking during the sit-in-protest cum public meeting, convenor Churamani said that the committee has concentrated on four villages namely Kontha Ahallup; Meitei Kairang; Lairikyengbam Leikai and Laipham Khunou.

He continued that as per the census report of 2001 out of a population of 5040; 2195 belong  to the Scheduled Tribe which occupies 43.5 percent of the land area in the state.

The meeting resolved  to appeal to the concerned including the Chief Minister; Deputy Chief Minister; Minister of Revenue and local MLA and others to save agricultural land in the state.

It also resolved to call for  an agricultural land use policy for strengthening Section 20 of MLR Act 1960; to make an ordinance to the affected area under Locality Area Protection and Preservation Committee (Kairang) not to use non-agricultural things and to extend financial assistance to farmers to take up a green revolution.Further according to a statement from the committee, it was also resolved to make an ordinance for not changing the original name of the villages and the localities.
