LAMKA, April 10: A three day Handloom Mela was inaugurated today at YPA Hall, Hiangtam Lamka by Langkhanpau Guite, Chairman of ADC CCpur.
In his address, the Chairman spoke about promoting the cultural values and traditional dresses through Self Help Groups participating in the Mela.
He also asked the media to take a big part in this kind of exercise which he say is a vital instrument to foster awareness to all sections of the people.
Today’s function was also attended by the ADC CCPur Vice Chairman Demmang Haokip and other members of the ADC and district administration officials.
The CEO Manmuanching of ADC in her key note address said that people should not depend only upon the Govt, but try to help themselves.
She added that it is a good thing that the mela is being organized with the funds that has come with the devolution of power from the state govt to the ADC. She reassured the participants that the ADC had and will always stand by them if they are sincere in their work.
The Mela was held inside the YPA hall, which houses 20 makeshift shops.
Most of the items displayed and sold in the Mela are traditional in nature and include shawls, carry bags, dresses and also artificial flowers that are made by various Self Help Groups who are showcasing their products and selling them.
The Mela will be held continuously for three days during which, the organizers have exhorted the people to buy the items on sale which will be a good signal that a Self-Help Group is functioning and acting as a means livelihood for many in the area.
Major highlights of the inaugural program today include a cultural dance presented by HYA and the Zenhang Lamka unit of YPA who presented their famous bamboo dance.
