IMPHAL, April 15:The Newseum in Washington DC, will honor Thangjam Dwijamani,a journalist of the State who died in the line of duty.
Each year, the Newseum rededicates its Journalists Memorial in a ceremony that honors reporters, editors, photographers and other journalists who die while reporting news in the previous year. Their names are etched in glass on a two-story Journalists Memorial, and their names are read aloud in a solemn ceremony. This year’s program will honor 84 journalists who died around the world including Thangjam Dwijamani Singh.
The ceremony will take place on May 13, 2013 at 10 am at the Newseum,555 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC.
Cathy Trost, Vice president of the Newseum in a letter has intimated the family members of the late scribe via Imphal Free Press about the memorial ceremony.
The official letter from the organizers has invited the family members of late Dwijamani to join the ceremony at the Newsuem Journalist Memorial .
It may be mentioned that Dwijamani (32), a resident of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai was killed on December 23, 2012 at Cheiraoching Dairy farm while covering an arson incident which erupted as a fall out of the Livingstone/ Momoko incident. He was a reporter for Prime News.
Dwijamai was covering an incident of a mob burning a truck and bravely continued recording despite police firing towards him. He sustained a bullet wound on his chest and later succumbed to his injuries at RIMS hospital.
This is for the first time that an international organization has acknowledged a scribe of the state for his contribution to the profession.
