9th Manipur Legislative Assembly candidate arrested with arms

IMPHAL, May 10: Maibam Bijoy Singh (50), son of M. Babu Singh said to be an electoral candidate in the 9th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections has been arrested on the charges of being a cadre of an armed group. A gun and four bullets were reportedly recovered from him.

A source from Bishenpur police station told IFP that Bijoy hails from Leimapokpam Bazaar which is under Nambol Police station in Bishenpur district. He was arrested by a combined team of Bishenpur police commandos and personnel of the 18 Sikh Regiment from Phoijing Lamkhai area around 9 pm yesterday.

The source added that Bijoy was apprehended while the combined security forces were conducting frisking and checking at Nambol Phoijing Lamkhai area.When Bijoy saw the frisking team, he tried to flee from the spot, raising the suspicion of the combined team which pursued him. Following his disclosure, a 9 mm pistol with a `made in Czech Republic` mark and four live rounds of bullets were recovered from a house where he had hidden them.

The combined team later handed Bijoy to the Nambol police station and a case has been taken up in the matter. Bijoy has further been remanded to 8 days of police custody after he was produced at the court today.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by Superintendent of Police, Bishnupur District, Manipur has confirmed the above news and identified Maibam Bijoy Meitei  as a cadre of the KYKL. at Phoijing Kaboklei Mini Bazar

The release said that 1 (one) 9mm pistol marked as CZ 75B CAL. 9 LUGER, made in Czech Republic along with 4(four) live rounds and 3(three) Mobile Hand Sets with SIM cards were seized from him. On interrogation, it was revealed that he was involved in the extortion and serving of monetary demand letters to the Pradhans and Members of Gram Panchayats, general public/Govt. official in Nambol area, the release said.
