IMPHAL, May 27: The hearing on the case challenging the eviction of residents of the Naga river lane/Kabo Leikai near North AOC, Imphal by the Manipur government using security personnel in court was not taken up today.
According to a source, a ruling made by Manipur High Court on April 18, 2013 directed that the standing properties of evicted residents are to remain status quo. But residents were evicted in the face of the ruling of the court.
21 petitioners of case no. wp (c) No. 105/2013 on which the court made a ruling to make the area of evicted residents remain status qou appealed to the court on May 21 to permit them to stay further at the area from where they were evicted.
With the court admitting their petition, the hearing on the MISC petition case was scheduled for today. But since the timing of the court was over the due hearing on the case was not held. It is learnt that the hearing on the case may be scheduled on the last day of the current month.
On the other hand, the court scheduled the hearing on the contempt case filed by petitioners with the court claiming that eviction in the face of the ruling of the court on the area of the evicted residents to remain status quo is tantamount to challenging the court for May 31. Respondents in the case include the Deputy Commissioner, Imphal East and Commissioner (Revenue) Government of Manipur. The court directed the respondents to file their counter affidavits with the court before May 31 in connection with the contempt case.
