Central team to visit Tipaimuk dam site

LAMKA, May 30: According to a highly reliable source, a core central team will visit the Tipaimukh dam site at the Manipur-Mizoram border to assess the situation in detail and analyze the soil, rock etc on June 3 and 4. They will come to Parbung  helipad in a helicopter and from there proceed to the project site by road via Sepuiroown.

An advanced party of the state officials numbering 15 members from the department of Forest, Agriculture and Power will also go to the project site via  CC Pur . A team of the district administration of CC Pur will also accompany the team from Imphal on June 1.The Tipaimuk dam has been proposed on the river Barak in the state of Manipur commission in1984. The construction was opposed by the locals who are mostly Hmar Tribes of the area  who claimed that the Government of India is violating their rights and on the grounds that it will damage the ecosystem of the region. The UN Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination  had urged the GOI  to stop the construction.

The dam will be 163 m high with a capacity of 1500 MW after completion which will be the second biggest dam in terms of power production in India, next only to Lower Subansiri dam in AP and will submerge 286 sq km of prime farmland while 40 million Baladesh will also be affected.
