IMPHAL, May 23: A joint meeting to be attended by representatives of political parties will be convened to field a common candidate against the candidate of the ruling Congress party in the Lok Sabha elections in Manipur to be held in 2014.

This was stated by O. Joy, advisor, MPP and a former opposition leader and Law Minister elected from Langthabal Assembly Constituency on Manipur People’s Party (MPP) ticket for several terms at a meeting with IFP.

He said that there was a necessity of unifying all political parties sans the Congress party to defeat its candidates  in the parliamentary election of the country to be held the next year. “It would not be possible to defeat the Congress party if non-congress political parties field their own candidates, he said while adding that such a move was necessary for the Congress candidates in the valley and hills to be defeated.

He added that there are some political parties which raise objections to the unification of political parties. “For example, it is not possible for BJP and CPI to go together on a common platform. They would propose that their own candidates would be fielded. When it comes to this scenario, the ruling party would take advantage in the election. So it is necessary to work out a strategy. The strategy is that a consensus independent candidate of all political parties to represent all political parties cutting across the party lines except the Congress party be fielded,” he added.

O Joy further said that a joint meeting of all political parties sans the Congress party will be convened to hold a minute discussion on the strategy with himself as Convenor before the end of this month.

Representatives of all political parties cutting across party lines  are expected to attend the said meeting.

Representatives who will attend the meeting will be invited to give their opinions by holding a discussion on the strategy at the meeting, O Joy added.
