IMPHAL, June 29: Congress MLA MK Preshow Shimaray is likely to fill in the post of the Deputy Speaker of the present 10 Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The Assembly Secretariat has issued an official notification yesterday for filling up the vacancy of the Deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly from among the members of the House through election.
As per the notification, members of the House could file nomination papers up to 12 noon today for the vacancy for which election would be held, informed the source.
However, during the stipulated time, only MK Preshow Shimray elected on a Congress ticket from 45-Chingai (ST) constituency of Ukhrul District has filed his election nomination paper for the post.
The source further said that MK Preshaw Shimaray filed the nomination paper at 11:55 a.m. today which was just five minutes short of the last hour.
MK Preshow Shimaray filed his nomination paper in 16 separate papers, the source informed while adding that a ruling MLA and opposition MLA each are said to become a proposer and seconder in each nomination paper.
It is learnt that he will be the Deputy Speaker of the ongoing 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly as he alone has filed the nomination paper.
Tomorrow being a Sunday, there will be no session of the House and as such the MLA may be officially declared elected as Deputy Speaker of the House when the House resumes its session on July 1 at 11 am.
When he filed the nomination paper, MLAs L Ibomcha Singh, Dr I Ibohalbi Singh and Nemcha Kipgen from the opposition parties were his proposers and seconders.
It may be mentioned that a CLP meeting presided over by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh who is also the leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) was held before MLA Preshaw Shimaray filed his nomination papers for the election of Deputy Speaker. The meeting which commenced from 9 a.m. today resolved to field MLA MK Preshow Shimaray as CLP candidate for Deputy Speaker.
