IMPHAL, June 30: Farmers of Wangjing Tentha are disappointed due to the failure of Langathel Mini Barrage constructed on Langathel River at Langathel Thingel Leikai of Thoubal district. In this regard, the Langathel Development Committee has been consistently urging the concerned authority to do some modification in the structure of the barrage so as to make it operational, said P Chaoba Singh while briefing media persons after an inspection visit of the barrage along with media persons today.
He said that the mini barrage was commissioned in December, 2006 by the then Minister of Minor Irrigation Ph Parijat Singh.
The paddy fields of Langathel including the paddy fields of Phundrei had benefited from this mini barrage thereby making the farmers happy, but it since the last two years it is not working which has rendered misery to the paddy field of more than three thousand hectares of land approximately.
He further added that repairing works was started a few months ago, however, being rainy season, the Development Committee feels that the ongoing repairing work of the mini barrage will not give expected result, he said.
Moreover, it is learnt that no work order is issued by the competent authority he said and added that the committee will not interrupt the contractors from doing their job, but the committee feels that working together with the people in the right manner would be better, he said.
He further appealed to the concerned Minister to look into the issue.
Later on, the media team along with the Development Committee also visited the water supply scheme which is constructed at the Pakhangba Lailamthokphan.
The secretary of the development committee said that this water supply scheme had been lying useless for the last three years. The visiting media team witnessed the reservoir and office structures covered with shrubs and plants.
Regarding this water supply scheme, the president of the development committee M Kishorekumar Singh commented that there are two water supply schemes in Langathel area but none of these are availing service to the local people while adding that all the water supply schemes in the area remain dysfunctional just after two three months of commissioning.
The water supply scheme of Pakhangba Lailamthokpham has remained unused for a long time and people are frightened of even entering the campus while alerting that there would be water borne diseases, the president said.
