Manipur University VC clarifies on manipulation issues

IMPHAL, July 4: Close on the heels of the Manipur University Teachers’ Association’s announcement that it will launch a series of agitations citing manipulation on several issues, the Manipur University Vice-Chancellor has today clarified on the issues.

The MUTA had alleged manipulation in selection of the three teachers in the 3rd executive council of Manipur University, non-appointment of statutory posts such as pro Vice Chancellor; Finance Officer; Controller of Examination; Director, Academic Staff College; Director, College Development Council, etc for the last more than two years, etc.

The VC H Nandakumar Sarma said that in order to build a healthy relation between himself and the teachers’ association, he had urged the association to recommend the teachers whose name would be submitted to the concern authorities for the selection in the 3rd executive council of Manipur University.

He said that he has full authority to recommend three names of teachers for the selection; however he had only wanted the teachers’ association to recommend the names within themselves, he added.

He said that the amendment of the statute 11 of the Manipur University Act, 2005, as approve by the Visitor, Manipur University in the “The Gazette of India: Extraordinary, Part III, Sec 4”, says that the Executive Council shall consists among others “Three teachers of the University, to be nominated by the Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Vice Chancellor”.

Meanwhile, regarding the non-appointment of several posts including pro Vice Chancellor; Finance Officer; Controller of Examination; Director, Academic Staff College; Director, College Development Council among others; the Vice Chancellor said that selection process of the same had been initiated since 2010, however, since none of the candidates applying fill the R/R for the posts, most of the posts continue to remain vacant.

He, however, added that the posts of Finance Office, Controller of Examinations, Director CDC, Director ASC have already been advertised and Selection Committees are to be held at the earliest.

Promotion interview for the teachers of Life Science and the constitution of the 4th Executive Council will be conducted during this month, he said.

Since, he assumed the office of Vice Chancellor on August 17, 2011, six faculty members from various departments have been promoted to Professor; five to the post of Asst Professor (Stage II) and two to the post of Asst Professor (Stage III), he said.
