Petitioner denied information on MGREGA, 2005

IMPHAL, July 16:  The Human Rights Law Network (Manipur) has denounced the manner where a petitioner was denied certain information sought by her pertaining to Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005.

A statement, issued by Meihoubam Rakesh, director of HRLN, had said that in compliance with the judgment and order passed on February 8, 2013 by Justice TNK Singh of the then Gauhati High Court, Imphal Branch in a Writ Petition WP (C) 649 of 2012 being filed by one Takhellambam Demona Chanu, the department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj had released a sum of Rs 10000 as compensation amount for the detriment suffered by the petitioner thereby denying certain information sought by her pertaining to MGREGA, 2005.

The statement stated that the said compensation amount was handed over to the petitioner in the form of a Mutiplicity City Cheque of the State Bank of India being Cheque No. 114158 drawn in favor of the Petitioner.

“The Writ Petition was filed by the Petitioner for the enforcement of the order passed by the Manipur Information Commission consequent upon an Appeal filed before the said Commission being Appeal Case No. 67 of 2009 wherein the Commission had directed the Public Authority i.e Secretariat Rural Development Department to pay the compensation for the detriment and suffering undergone by her in pursuing the matter of seeking information under the Right to Information Act,” it added.

Further, it said that the Petitioner was compelled to move the Writ Petition to the High Court for the enforcement of the said order passed by the Manipur Information Commission as the concerned authority failed to release the compensation amount even after the lapse of two years from the date of passing the said order by the Information Commission.
