IMPHAL, July 12: Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on a fast for the last 12 years demanding repeal of the draconian Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) has donated 80 books of different collection to the State Central Library authority today at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital security ward where she is lodged under judicial custody.
Speaking to media persons, she stated that she felt very bad when the state library was burnt down as she used to be a regular visitor at the state library and equating the act as akin to burning down of an entire ancient history, culture and tradition.
She further said that till today, she has donated more than 200 books to the state library adding that among the 80 books one of the books which she like the most is “Dead Soul”.
She continued that she is also going to donate over 100 books to the State’s Sajiwa Jail Library soon.
Saying that some organisations have been campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize for her, she appealed to the concerned organisations to join hands together in her agitation and work for the betterment of the society instead of campaigning for the Nobel Prize.
“Let us stop working only for our own good” she appealed.
L Pramodkumar, Counter Assistant of the library said that today is the fourth time that Sharmila has donated books to the library and added the library has been keeping the books donated by her in a separate collection.
