Cabinet defers taking action on border row until committee submits report

IMPHAL, August 24: Even as the international border fencing work at Churachandpur, Chandel and Ukhrul has been creating much flutter amongst sections of the society claiming that Manipur has lost several villages to Myanmar due to the border fencing, the state cabinet has today discussed the issue and decided that the government will wait for the official report of the Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing Committee before taking any action.

Addressing media persons soon after the conclusion of the cabinet meeting, Education, CAF&PD minister and government spokesperson M Okendro said that considering the issue of the Indo-Myanmar border fencing to be of utmost importance, the state cabinet today presided over by the state Chief Minister minutely discussed the issue.

The cabinet has decided that the government will act according to the report of the committee of the high level officers and after understanding the desires of the public, he said.

In the meantime, a meeting of the Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing Committee formed with the Principal Secretary (Home) Dr J Suresh Babu as the chairman was also held this afternoon at 4:30, the government spokesperson informed.

During the meeting, it was resolved that an official team of the committee including the IGAR (S) will leave for Moreh on August 26, he said.

Further briefing the media team, the spokesperson said that the official team will make an on the spot inquiry of the Disputed Area/Pillars of the border fencing during the visit.

The team on its return from the disputed area will submit its official report on the situation of the border fencing to the government, he said before adding that in accordance with the official report of the team, the government will decide on what follow up steps to be taken up.

The government spokesperson further informed that the state Governor, who is also the Governor of neighbouring state Nagaland has reached Imphal and will visit Moreh on August 27, a day after the return of the official spot inquiry team.
