DESAM appeals to UNC to call off bandh

IMPHAL, August 10: The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has fervently appealed the United Naga Council (UNC) to cancel its proposed a 48 hours bandh in naga habited areas slated to effect from the midnight of August 11 to August 13 considering the Patriot’s Day which falls on August 13.

A statement issued by Paikhomba Wahengbam, deputy secy publicity and propaganda DESAM stated that the day, August 13 marked the event of Anglo-Manipuri War where British snatched the State’s democracy forcefully and execution of State’s warriors by hanging till death.

Meanwhile, DESAM’s vice president Moirangthem Angamba has strongly condemned the remark made by State’s education minister M Okendro during a function held at the campus of DM College recently saying that the comments of the Minsiter was irresponsible.

While denouncing the decision of the Higher Education Department that those students who turn violent would be expelled from their respective colleges and that colleges which get damaged resulting from the movement of the students would not cater to infrastructure works and other facilities till five years, he further said the decision of the concerned authorities of the department was unfortunate addding that the agitation of the students was legitimate as its long time demands were not heard by the government.
